Ford Capri GL Mk 3 – 2lt Pinto engine – Colour = Gold -1983
This car was a barn find in Saham Toney near Watton Norfolk, the property of a lady doctor who with her family had moved to Portugal. Purchased on the 3rd of September 2017
Carried home on a transporter first task to free of the seized wheels and pump up the tyres. Then work started in stripping down the car completely removing wheels brakes and all mechanical parts.
Strip out inside the car removing seats, panels, and carpets to leave a bare shell. Some works are actioned on the body panels but in very good condition once cleaned down, very clean and strong underneath. 2018 Car then sent away for complete respray.
On return rebuild from the ground upwards brakes wheels tyres brake pipes front discs etc., Rear axle cover half shaft bearings and new leaf springs. Inside seats completely cleaned and refurbished, all panels cleaned and all refitted. Power steering fitted to car and necessary components. 6 panel dash fitted, and all the extra wiring needed installed.
The engine was very good after checking started second crank over only 24,000 miles on the clock.
Electronic ignition has also been installed. Twin choke Webber sent away for full recondition. We also had to fit valve oil seals, but this was done without removal of the cylinder head.
Future projects now carried out in March 2023, remove engine gearbox and prop shaft. Remove cylinder head from engine, secondhand cylinder head had been skimmed and new exhaust valve seats fitted new valves springs and collets also fitted.
Fitted new head to engine and set up regarding cam shaft and tappets, also a new clutch was fitted to the engine while out of the car. A replacement five speed gearbox has been sourced and completely stripped down during the summer, new seals and bearings fitted also a new selector shaft fitted and other small parts. A hole drilled in the bottom of the gearbox for easy oil draining.
Engine refitted into car as first part of this build once in the new gearbox was offered up to the engine, but the gearbox cross member was different on this box and needed a modification to be made to enable this to be fitted so a new crossmember bracket was fabricated. Prop shaft refitted with no issues.
A full set up of engine was carried out and test runs conducted with a significate improvement in performance and driving capability.
Very pleasing to further restoration of the mechanical side of the car.
Winter 2023 to spring of 2024 has seen more improvements to the mechanical side of the car with a new inlet manifold being fitted housing twin Webber 40 carburetors, a pressure fuel regulator has also been fitted along with an oil bath breather to deal with car sump fumes.
On the ignition side a complete renovation of the ignition side has taken place with an electronic ignition system being installed which includes a new distributer coil and control box manufacture by Bespac.These improvements have greatly improved the overall performance of car.
